I would argue that 500 days of summer doesn’t meet the questioner’s desire for a lighthearted movie. It’s pretty glum.
I would recommend, similar to what Olly said: animated movies (not the disney princess kind) especially Pixar etc. There’s often a romantic subplot, but it’s not the kind that makes you sad you’re them. They’re funny and always end happily. I’d recommend Ratatouille, Aladdin, Monster’s Inc, Brave, etc!

  2. Lisa Says:

The film that popped immediately into my head for Maz is Lost In Translation. Not only do they not end up together, they don’t hook up either. It’s never spelled out whether their chemistry is romantic, platonic, or perhaps even vaguely filial/paternal, and that ambiguity is what makes it so refreshing. It is what it is for as long as it lasts, and it has value.

    Rom com’s:
    SPOILERS.

500 days of summer does not end with the main couple getting together. Also, it has the added bonus of being the best Rom com in general. Fact.
