As a rude American I would probably just say, “Actually, I prefer Oliver,” or “I know it’s silly, but I actually prefer Oliver.” This has to be said after the first time they shorten your name, otherwise they may feel awkward after having used a nickname for some time.

You should just go. Even though you don’t plan to be there for long, you want your time there to be pleasant and you can get that by joining in and at least trying to form bonds with these guys. Falling out with your boss or just getting off on a bad foot won’t be good for you, and won’t there be other men finding this activity just as awkward?

(a) Throw a sickie on the day
(b) Tell your boss that your girlfriend is a militant feminist and that if you even think about going to stare at women pole dancing, she’ll put your testicles through the paper shredder.
(c) Have one of those long conversations with your boss in which you break it slowly that it’s a bad idea and suggest other things that are much better. I’d start by asking her why it is she wants to go pole dancing in the first place. (However, prepare yourself for the horror that is a woman in her mid-forties pole-dancing in an attempt to pull a fresh-faced newcomer to her team…)

I agree it must be for a single-use project of some kind because it looks like all the jars were bought at the same sort of time, not emptied particularly thoroughly (the glass is still coated heavily with Nutella from what I can see) so they’ve not bothered even rinsing them, or leaving the lids off (so thought really has not gone into this).

I think we should add in the possibility of a Nutella-based sex game.

Just a thought to expand on your Coke ‘Share with friend’ campaign. Years ago chocolate bar manufacturers came under fire for selling super-sized bars (Mars Kingsize etc). Cadburies wriggled off the hook my claiming that because their bars were designed to be broken into pieces they were therefore for sharing, so they we’rent one single giant portion of Type 2 diabetes, but a bar to be divided in small portions between several people. Mars had to respond by converting their ‘King Size’ to ‘Duo’ – two bars in one packet and therefore claim that it was two servings.

I’ve noticed on the back of 500ml coke bottles they now claim on the nutritional bumpf that all the RDAs etc are in relation to a 250ml serving – which implies the bottle is for two people. So behind the overt social media ‘Share’ in the new ‘Like’ references theres possibly a second agenda

I just wondered.. if a question isn’t answered because you have an abundance that week, is there any chance you’d ever answer it on a slower week? My question was a bit convoluted but full of praise for the podcast.. I thought you might email back or something. Re. polling stations.

You referred to the people who staff them as ‘volunteers’. They are not.

I’ve worked as a Poll Clerk (the people who check you against the register and issue the ballot papers) and Presiding Officer (the person who is in charge of the polling station) for a number of elections and we do get paid for it.

It can vary from place to place but those who do it are usually a mixture of council workers and others (such as myself) who are looking to earn a bit of extra money.

It’s a long day, though. You have to be there to help set everything up – polling booths, tables, chairs, posters, signage etc. – ready to open the polling station at 7.00am and you’re then on duty until the polls close at 10.00pm. You then help pack everything away again. If you’re the Presiding Officer you also have to complete a number of forms and then take the sealed ballot box and other sealed packets to the count venue.

Re: the use of schools as polling stations – you might be amused to hear that in Italy it is always schools (as far as I know); as polling is on Sunday and Monday, we get Saturday off as they set the school up, Monday obviously, and Tuesday as well for ‘disinfestation’ (which I think is just basic cleaning) – election time was always a happy time for us.
